Yesterday’s workshop “Strategic Networking and LinkedIn for B2B marketing and sales” gave a clear take-home message to corporate rising stars:

Build your own email list.

This morning’s news briefing* gives you 3 reasons why:

  • LinkedIn will be blocked in Russia
  • LinkedIn is restricted in China
  • Brazil suspended WhatsApp

LinkedIn is an amazing place to build your network, develop your reputation, get and nurture leads – but it is not your network.

And you don’t own it. Microsoft does.

Consider this:

If LinkedIn deletes your connections, will it affect you?
Since you are reading this, I suggest that it might.

So, let’s be practical, and here’s a 3-point plan you can do right now:

  1. Open an Excel worksheet. Put your email addresses into it. Keep here your contact and sales/interview process notes.
  2. Make it a habit to put your business cards (hot prospects, referrals, and people you do want to stay in touch with) in this system right away. When you connect with interesting people on LinkedIn, add their email addresses to your system and a note about why they are there.
  3. Refer to and act on it several times a day, if you are going places.

Keep it simple.

Even if you use Salesforce, I suggest that you don’t own that either. I encourage you to be your own mobile unit, and keep safe and vital the business relationships you work hard to build. Be prepared to be independent of any organisation or the internet.

Regret weighs more than discipline.
